At an emergency meeting in Ariel, Mayor Ron Nahman told his municipal council that even the most basic of community building will now require personal approval of Olmert via the Defense Ministry. He went on to explain that he and others would explore every avenue in order to avoid the catastrophe that such a decree would cause.
Last week Nachman received notification from Defense Ministry bureau chief, Brig.-Gen. Michael Herzog, of the new process for building approval which includes the ministry's approval of all construction plans.
Pointing out that the new directives were arbitrarily decided without Knesset discussion or decision concerning a total settlement freeze, Nahman said that such a wholesale trampling of citizens' rights mandates a strong reaction to insure individual rights. Nachman vowed to fight the decree.
